Research Impact Series: Understanding Research Metrics

As a researcher, understanding how your researcher identity and research outputs are measured and quantified is crucial to the dissemination and impact of your research. Through a series of workshops focusing on different ways to maximize your research impact, you will gain a better understanding of the quantitative measures of research impact, their context, responsible use, and management of your researcher identity. By taking charge of your researcher identity, you can better distinguish your research from other researchers; provide a more accurate insight into your impact; increase the visibility of your research; and manage a portfolio of your contributions. This first session is designed to help Stanford faculty, students, and staff understand the different uses of metrics, importance of tracking the impact of research outputs, and responsible use of research metrics.
Learning outcomes:

  • Distinguish between numerous journal/article/author metrics, including journal impact factor, altmetrics, citation counts, h-index
  • Articulate the benefits and drawbacks of different research metrics
  • Identify the appropriate metrics to evaluate your research impact
  • Learn best practices and responsible use of research metrics
  • Gain hands-on practice using some of the research metric tools available at Lane Medical Library
Recommended audience: faculty, research scientists, graduate students, fellows, postdocs
